Innovating on Halfords buy-now, pay-later finance page for ease-of-use and a reduction in cognitive load, particularly on mobile.

Some customers prefer to spread the cost when purchasing items. Halfords offers a buy-now, pay-later service where the terms of the agreement depend on the value and duration of the purchase. In the existing design the financing terms were set out in a static 7x8 column table. The user needed to search and compare the full range of options and find the offer that best suited their situation. The customer was doing the heavy lifting and the table was not making the task any easier.
On mobile there was a more serious issue as the whole table wasn't visible at any one time and the user needed to scroll and manoeuvre around the smaller screen. My task was to reduce the cognitive load and help the user to identify the best financing option as quickly as possible. After exploratory research with an open-ended question on how users experienced the existing display, I settled on a slider design that is efficient on space and offers a tactile satifaction. Now, instead of showing what Halfords offers, users can enter their own parameters and see what terms exist for their situation.
Final Redesign
In this instance it was essential to liase with the devlopment team throught the design proccess. While it might seem like a simple element, the calculator can have significant impact on development resource and key site metrics (e.g. site load times).
