What caught my interest about this challenge is the way that dentists work across the UK. They are essential and highly-regarded professionals working within a weak employment architecture: they are self-employed ‘associates’ who are paid by dental practices according to a rate for each Unit of Dental Activity (UDAs) they perform for the NHS and who, in their own time, file their own taxes and pay themselves for sick leave, days off, equipment, lab fees and insurance etc. The burden of personal and professional management lies with the practitioner dentist. All the administrative support they receive is a monthly payslip, which is unstandardised across practices. My aim was to design a mobile application that gives dentists the security to maximise the benefits of their flexible employment situation. This meant giving them the tools to easily manage their financial and professional and administrative tasks.
I built out three main sections: financial management; time planning and well-being, and professional development. Each section needed some differences in design and the financial management section was the most extensive. I set up the design to be ready to be connected to an API as I had explored the potential for extracting the data required to inform the app from ExactPro, which is the software widely used in dental practices. The static screenshots above show some of the key stages in displaying financial information in an accessible calendar format and at an aggregate level.

Technical development: when faced with an idea you can't produce I learned to see it as an opportunity to further develop my expertise in using UX/UI design tools. Planning for backend functionality: I enjoyed exploring about how the mechanics of the app influences the users' experience (e.g. automatic population of data influences usability and efficiency of the user experience).
